WhatsApp faces 4 million Rouble fine in Russia for failing to remove banned content. All you need to know

Meta owned WhatsApp is potentially subject to a fine of up to 4 million roubles (equivalent to ₹41,42,586) as Russia has accused the messaging service of not removing prohibited content. According to a Moscow court, as reported by state-owned news agency RIA on Friday, WhatsApp is being held accountable for its alleged failure to delete the banned material.

While Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of WhatsApp, faced a ban in Russia last year due to being labeled an “extremist” organization, the messaging app itself, which enjoys significant popularity in the country, had not previously encountered legal action for its failure to eliminate forbidden content.

According to the RIA report, the specific details regarding the content that WhatsApp allegedly failed to delete were not mentioned. The administrative case against WhatsApp was initiated by Roskomnadzor, the communications regulator in Russia.

During the initiation of its military campaign in Ukraine, Russia implemented stringent military censorship regulations. These laws resulted in the imposition of fines on various technology companies, including Google, Wikipedia, and Discord.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp is currently working on a revamped message menu for its Android app, as reported by sources. The new menu is expected to resemble the context menu found in iOS when messages are selected. Upon long-pressing a message, the menu will offer five options to choose from. This update was discovered in the WhatsApp beta version 2.23.11.4 for Android, indicating that the redesigned message menu is still in development and will likely be released in a future beta update. Additionally, WhatsApp has recently been observed developing an Android user interface reminiscent of the iPhone’s design.

The instant messaging app is reportedly in the process of redesigning the message menu for Android, as per information from WhatsApp development tracker WABetaInfo. The redesigned menu is expected to have a resemblance to the context menu found in WhatsApp for iOS. This update will allow users to conveniently select actions for a specific message. WABetaInfo has also provided a screenshot of the upcoming message menu, which reveals five options displayed below the selected message: Delete, Forward, Reply, Keep, and Info.
