WhatsApp users can now share photos in HD, HD video option also incoming

WhatsApp will soon let users send photos in HD quality, the Meta-owned messaging company announced earlier this week. With the new update, users can send photos in either HD (2000×3000 pixels) or standard (1365×2048 pixels) quality. Naturally, photos in HD will take more time to send or load, depending on the internet speed. HD photos also take more storage. However, WhatsApp users have long asked for this option that some platforms already offer.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also shared an update on Facebook. In a post, Zuckerberg simply writes, “Sharing photos on WhatsApp just got an upgrade — now you can send in HD.” The Facebook post also includes a video that shows how to send photos in HD or standard quality. The process to send photos remains the same, though there’s an “HD” option at the top, next to the pen and crop tools. Here, users can select between standard or HD tools, as you can see in the photo below.

In a press note, WhatsApp states that photos by default will be available in standard quality to ensure the app remains “fast and reliable.” The press note adds, “If you receive a photo when you have low bandwidth connectivity, you can choose on a photo-by-photo basis whether to keep the standard version or upgrade it to HD.” WhatsApp points out that HD Photos is rolling out globally over the next few weeks. WhatsApp will also receive the HD Videos option soon.

WhatsApp has been receiving some significant updates since the beginning of this year. Earlier in May, WhatsApp added support for multiple devices — one of the biggest updates for the app. The feature rolled out after WhatsApp added multi-device capability to let users use the app on a single phone and four other non-phone devices simultaneously. Now, users can use the app on multiple smartphones, though features remain limited to the primary device.

Moreover, earlier this month, WhatsApp announced a screen-sharing feature during video calls. Screen-sharing is a common feature across many video conferencing platforms, like Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. It lets users share their screens, which can be useful during a presentation. With screen-sharing, WhatsApp will take on the likes of Google Meet and Teams.

The Meta-owned platform is said to receive more features later. WhatsApp is currently testing multiple accounts on a single device. Once the feature is widely available, users will be able to use multiple WhatsApp accounts on a single phone. Speaking of accounts, WhatsApp is also exploring the option to log in with an ID or social media instead of a phone number. These features could take some more months before they are available to all.
